Children are very resilient; when it comes to overcoming obstacles. However; in many cases the feelings or experiences are simply overwhelming and assistance is needed. When life experiences are suppressed they can emerge later in life and cause additional emotional harm. Finding workable solutions is extremely importance in living a happy life. While there are many approaches available to treat depression; not all approaches take into account adolescents and teens communication styles. Play therapy and Sand play is uniquely designed to engage this population in a non-threatening way. Some outcomes of these approaches include but not limited to the following:
- greater impulse control
- higher communication
- reduced anger/aggression
- reduced social phobia
- Amplified concentration
- increased energy
- improved family bonding
- higher academic performance
The Association for Play Therapy states the following regarding play therapy “Play therapy is the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psycho-social difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development (APT, 2015)” http://www.a4pt.org. Each play session is different due to each child being unique. However; the role of the therapist is the same; to reflect content, emotions, and encourage growth by taking the journey of healing with the child, as the child sees fit. The child’s journey in the play room is non-directive; which simply means the child leads the way to his/her healing.
